Sandy and I planned and looked forward to from almost a year in advance, our Mediterranean Cruise. Not only would it be a cruise to remember but it would be the first time either of us had seen that part of the world. That's not counting my brief visit to Valencia and Barcelona, Spain many years ago. That was a business trip and short, thus very little memory remained..

As the cruise was to depart from Venice, Italy we took advantage of the opportunity to go early and spend a couple of days in Venice. That would give us the chance to do a walking tour of the historic old city with its canals and historic buildings and architecture.

The camera equipment used on this trip was the Canon 40D dSLR and Canon G12. Lenses consisted of a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, and for long distance shots, Canon 100-400mm f/4-5.6 L IS USM telephoto.

Our hotel in Venice. Crowne Plaza Quarto d' Altino.

The train station is located right behind the hotel making it convenient for catching the train to the old historic city where the canals are.

Waiting for our train to take us into the city. This one is going the other direction. Here we are. We will board for our ride into the old city.

The rail line ends at the station on the edge of the old city. Facing the Grand Canal from the train station. Directly across the canal is San Simeone Piccolo (also called San Simeone e Giuda) a church. Built 1718-38.

Ponte degli Scalzi Bridge. Crossing the Grand Canal just down from the train station. A lot of little vendor stalls selling snacks and small souvenirs line the river front in this area.

A view down the Grand Canal from one of the many bridges which cross the canal.

There are many opportunities to photograph up and down the canals from the bridge tops. Not only gondolas, but water taxis travel up and down the canals.

A gondolier. There is a common misconception that gondoliers sing to serenade their passengers. They do not.     Looking across at The Erberia. This used to be a wholesale market and is a frequently photographed sight.

Bridges are arched to allow clearance for gondolas to pass underneath.
